DEF LEPPARD's PHIL COLLEN Discusses His 'Extreme Blues' Project DELTA DEEP On 'Talk Is Jericho (Audio)

DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen was interviewed on the latest, hour-long episode of "Talk Is Jericho", the podcast of Chris Jericho, the world champion pro wrestler, actor, New York Times best-selling author and lead vocalist of the metal band FOZZY. Speaking about DELTA DEEP, his "extreme blues" project that also includes STONE TEMPLE PILOTS bassist Robert DeLeo, drummer Forrest Robinson (TOTO, INDIA.ARIE, THE CRUSADERS) and singer Debbi Blackwell-Cook, the godmother of Collen's wife, costume designer Helen L. Simmons, Phil said: "It's extreme blues, or we're calling it alternative roots, 'cause it's really over the top. It started off being bleusy, but when we started recording electric, it ended up sounding more like LED ZEPPELIN. And that's me, Debbi Blackwell-Cook, who's my wife Helen's godmother. She's this black woman, 60 years old, who sings her ass off. It's kid of like a cross between Chaka Khan and Tina Turner; it's that kind of really powerful voice. And Robert DeLeo, who plays bass with STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, he's playing bass. He's on it and he's killing it. We're actually recording with him at the moment, and it's amazing. And Forrest Robinson, when I met him, he was [playing with] INDIA.ARIE and played a lot of these kind of almost hip-hop kind of R&B stuff. But then he played drums for THE CRUSADERS, which is jazz. But really, he's the ultimate rock drummer. So just the four of us have managed to get this monstrous sound."

Collen also talked about his guitar-playing approach in DELTA DEEP, describing it as "way more aggressive, I play way more aggressive in this. I mean, it's still obviously me playing guitar, but it's a very different approach. Not knocking a lot of the blues stuff that's around these days, but it's very tired and the same old thing. What we're doing with this, it's very aggressive… I've never heard blues like this. It almost sounds like RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE does MUDDY WATERS, if you can imagine that."
